Men (and Women!) - if your idea of the perfect getaway is fishing around the waters in Port Douglas then this is the place for you!
Port Douglas is geared up for all types of fishing from outer reef, heavy tackle, to light tackle to just sitting on a dock or off some rocks with a rod.
With Port Douglas being the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, the fish in the Coral Sea are only a short boat ride away.
For the big game fisherman there is the world renowned Giant Black Marlin (Sept-Dec) that makes Port Douglas a world class fishing destination. An amazing 70% of the 1000+ pound Black Marlins in the world are caught in this area. Other large game fish, Tuna, Sailfish and Giant Trevally all offer blistering runs and great displays.
If you prefer a more light tackle reef fishing trip from Port Douglas then you can look forward to catching Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Trevally, Nannygai and Mackerel (best June – Oct). There is also great fishing to be had in the rivers and estuaries where you can find Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Queenfish and Finger Mark (Oct-April).
For the more sedate fisherman you can rent a rod – highly recommended to have a smooth outfit with a well-oiled drag system, whether it is a spinning reel or overhead reel. Lines should be spooled with 6kg line with leaders ranging between 10-15kg.
There are shops in Port Douglas that can sell you different types of bait and lures. Ideal land fishing places in Port Douglas include Shipwreck Wharf, Rex Smeal Park, Marina Road Wall and the southern end of Four Mile Beach. Great for Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Trevally, Whiting and Blue Salmon.
Some restaurants will offer to prepare your fish for you for a nominal price if you eat at the restaurant and if you are on a fishing charter all fish is filleted and prepared ready for the BBQ and dinner – yum!

If you are keen golfer then Port Douglas is the perfect golfing location. With an average of 200 sunshine days a year you’ll be using your sun visor more than your golfing umbrella!
There are three local golf courses in and around Port Douglas that can offer you varied courses and golfing challenges.
The Mirage Country Club is rated as one of the world’s best resort course. It is an 18 hole international standard championship golf course that was designed by renowned golf architect, Peter Thomson. Not only will you be keeping your eye on the ball, but also the stunning scenery. With a panoramic mountain range on one side and the blue waters of the Coral Sea on the other, golfing experiences don’t get better than this.
The second major golf course in Port Douglas is the Palmer Sea Reef Golf Course which is ranked in Australia’s top 100 courses, with all of its 6135 metres maintained to championship standard. Designed by Thomson, Wolveridge & Perrett, it is filled with undulating fairways and 89 bunkers that are set amongst large greens and mounds, so ensuring that your golfing expertise will be tested and challenged. Again, you will be playing in paradise with sweeping mountain views and gentle ocean breezes.
Mossman Golf course is the last Port Douglas golf club in the trilogy. Located about 20 minutes’ drive from Port Douglas in nearby Mossman, it’s an 18 hole golf course with the local vibe. Offering affordable golf for both the serious and casual golfer and set in stunning scenery that only tropical Far North Queensland can offer, you can drive your golf buggy under palm trees and through the lowland rainforest vista.
All golf courses have post golf refreshment with club houses, where you can reflect on your game over an amber nectar, good food and great views.
