No holiday would be properly researched without checking out the weather! Port Douglas weather is generally split into two distinct seasons.  ‘The Dry’ occurs in the southern hemisphere winter/spring period from around April to December, with the 'Waterfall Season', filling in the December to April period of the southern hemisphere summer/autumn months.

Known to the locals as ‘The Waterfall Season’, the period between December and April is when Port Douglas weather can become a little waterlogged!  However, temperatures average between 23 and 30 degrees C, so there is no chance of travellers feeling cold during this time, and no need for jackets and long pants!  ‘The Waterfall Season’, by name, however attracts lots of rainfall and brings about some of the worlds most beautiful waterfalls and raging rivers. There is no better time to experience the worlds oldest rainforest than some time during the waterfall season, ask the tour operators what they think.

For those wanting to experience Port Douglas in the Dry, try to travel between May and December.  This period is generally regarded as the best but is busy, boasting low levels of rainfall, clear blue sunny skies with comfortable temperatures during the day, and cool, balmy, tropical evenings, with an average sea temperature of 23 – 24 degrees C. 

Don’t despair if you are traveling in December, January and February, as the Port Douglas weather although humid is uniquely tropical boasting breathtaking waterfalls and crystal clear rivers. Experience spectacular sun showers and thunderous curtain rain - the perfect place for honeymooners.

And for those who are game enough to take a chance, the heavy rain might be fun for you, and as Port Douglas weather is not cold over these months, if you get a little wet, at least you won’t be cold, particularly given the sea temperature is a warm and inviting 28 – 29 degrees C!
