Load spill causes Mt Molloy to Mossman Rd closure

The Cairns Police have advised that the Rex Range section of the Mt Molloy-Mossman Road was closed this morning after a semi trailer carrying a long concrete beam was unable to negotiate a tight corner.  The trailer section of the rig slid off the road causing the load to detach and fall onto the roadway, blocking the highway in both directions.  The road is expected to remain closed to ALL traffic until this (Tuesday) afternoon whilst crews recovered the load and damaged trailer.

At 11.40am Cairns Police issued a media release to advise of a serious traffic crash on the Kuranda range section of the Kennedy Highway. As a result of this crash the Kuranda range is closed to all traffic in both directions until further notice. Motorists are therefore advised to make alternate travel arrangements and await further advice.

Coldest day in Cairns

Cairns recorded its coldest March morning in 56 years yesterday when an early onset of cold weather was recorded at 5:50am.  Port Douglas is still recording temperatures of 24 while Cairns was a cold 17.7 degrees at the same time.

Bats move to Cairns

From the reports in the Cairns Post and from Cairns residents, it looks as if the Port Douglas bat population in Reef Park has moved. They believe there are 5000 bats and are calling for a cull. CSIRO for sustainable ecosystems head scientist David Westcott said the surveys that are carried out monthly, by radio transmitters, had the bat numbers increasing and decreasing frequently even weekly. "It’s quite possible they went to Anderson St, Ingham, Tableland or the Daintree," Dr Westcott said.

Head on crash on Port Rd

Police and Fire services are urging all motorists coming in and out of Port Douglas to be careful as there has been a major head on crash between a ute and wagon at about 8am this morning. It is believed that the crash occurred due to one of the drivers falling asleep at the wheel, but there has been no major injuries in the accident.

Public Transport coming for Douglas

Cairns Regional Council Mayor Val Schier announced today on Radio Port Douglas that the funding for a transport system in the former Douglas Shire has been approved. Mayor Schier said that the funding will last two years and will be assessed after this period to see if the bus transport is feasible.

EPA tells furious residents to sit tight

Yesterday evening Scientists, the EPA and Cairns Regional Council reps spoke to a 70 strong audience including Major Val Shier, Cr Julia Leu and LNP candidate Craig Batchelor. "There is no guarantees the animals will disperse and if they do they will be someone else's problem" said the the EPA. The EPA failed to encourage the residents to learn to live with the animals. Residents of whom are suffering intensely will continue their fight for the bats to be removed.




Spectacular Tinaroo Dam overflows

This shot shows Tinaroo Dam enjoying plenty of rain falling in the Tablelands with a solid 1.5 metre overflow. The Dam looks great said local campers enjoying the spoils. Tinaroo is the regions agricultural reservoir ensuring plenty of water for farmers over the coming months.

Festivals board named

The Festivals Advisory Committee has been appointed by Cairns Regional Council. The committee is Olive Tau Davis, Sarah Collins, Tony Hillier, Chris Pascoe, Ursula Lyons, Fred Lizzio, Jillian Causer, Ken Dobbs and David Hudson. From Council, Alan Blake, Linda Cooper, Diane Forsyth and Julie Leu. The committee, is on a two year term and will meet once a month.
