Work starts on Esplanade upgrade

Surveyors on The Esplanade.

The upgrade of Four Mile Beach Esplanade begins on Monday as part of the Port Douglas Water Front Master Plan.

Douglas Regional Manager, Liz Collyer, said the design of the upgrade was heavily influenced by feedback from the public.

"Council’s commitment to meaningful community engagement that was a key component in developing the Master Plan has continued in the design phase of the Esplanade upgrade.

"Through numerous community engagement opportunities, Council has received high levels of input from the local community on the design.

"The final concept design of the Four Mile Beach Esplanade Upgrade, acknowledges the community input gathered throughout the engagement process," Ms Collyer said.

The Esplanade Upgrade works signify the first capital works to be undertaken as part of the Master Plan.

The works, to be carried out on the Esplanade between Macrossan and Mowbray Streets, aim to improve pedestrian movement and safety, reduce roadside erosion and improve drainage along the Esplanade.

Ms Collyer said the completed project will ensure that the natural beauty of the area and its laid back character are maintained, but told residents that some disruption will occur in the construction process.

"Due to the nature of the works it is likely the construction will bring some noise, possible changes to normal traffic conditions, and temporary loss of parking."

The Esplanade upgrade is expected to be completed by late April early May 2011 in time for the annual Carnivale celebrations.
