Wonga residents show united front

Residents of Wonga Beach want more infrastructure to keep their kids amused.

Nearly 200 people converged on Wonga Beach park on Friday afternoon to speak with Cairns Regional Council staff and Cr Julia Leu in an effort to establish a skate park for the community's kids.

The building of other amenities including steps to the beach and more benches on which to sit and take in the views was also raised.

"It was wonderful to see all the kids come and talk to them (Council) about what they want and the adults actually show support for the kids," said Wonga resident Jenni Walker.

Ms Walker said residents have created a facebook page, and are urging locals to get active in the campaign.

"The facebook page is up and running 'Wonga Beach Skate Park’ and we need lots of people north of Mossman to write letters to the Council and ask for these things to happen.

"There are not many facilities at all at wonga Beach there is two little parks one with a swing, digger and slippery slide and one with a netball court and basic swings. But with the growing

population we need amenities for the kids to keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

"Kids are bored, they get in trouble for riding on the roads, they get in trouble for hanging out at chicanes, they get in trouble and they do silly things like peg rocks at people's roofs and throw mangoes."

Ms Walker said it was important that everyone in the area make the effort to raise the issues of Wonga Beach in order for positive change to occur.
