Tallarook to set new course for new era

One of Port Douglas’ icons, the 90ft timber motor sailer “Tallarook” is about to set a new course.

This historic vessel, built in 1946 by the Australian Navy as a General Purpose Vessel was originally intended to be used as a minesweeper and continued her naval support service well into the past war years.
Throughout the past years, the vessel was converted into a stunning luxury motor sailer.

A new era is about to be set for this vessel with her vast deck space. Christoph (Chris) Theobald, former skipper and dive instructor of Tallarook, purchased the vessel from the owner company in Western Australia.

With his accounting history and long-time business experience, there are all sails set to become another successful company in Port Douglas.  Chris said, “Our goal is, that at the end of the day, our guests step off the vessel with a smile on their faces.  I’m aware that there is a lot of competition in this market and I am looking forward to a good working relationship with the travel agents".

With promoting “Tallarook” not only nationally but also internationally, Chris will bring more people to Port Douglas and its wonderful attractions.

With the new permit, Tallarook will be able not only to operate at the Great Barrier Reef but also, and mainly, at Low Isles, just a foot step away from Port Douglas. The boat is set up for wedding parties, private charters and other functions as well.

Chris summarised “…this really is a great opportunity because the boat is so big and comfortable for the customers and they can be part of a trip with a touch of history…”

With changes in crew and management already in place, Chris shows his serious intention to become a respected and reliable business partner for both agents and the hotel industry.  His local knowledge of over 14 years will surely help to establish and achieve his ambitious goals.

Good luck Tallarook and may there always be gentle winds in your sails….

Editors comments: Another unique experience to be enjoyed from Port Douglas.  It is this type of very special trip that will increase visitors activities.  Now there is yet another reason to go out on the reef more than once during a holiday in Port.
