Member for Cook Jason O'Brien has joined senior emergency services representatives in reminding local families to take care on the far north roads during the school holidays.
 
Mr O'Brien said police were rolling out a range of measures to ensure motorists did the right thing, with paramedics and firefighters on standby to assist in the event of a crash.
 
“Traditionally the Christmas break is the worst time of year for road fatalities," Mr O'Brien said.
 
"I’m calling on all Cook residents to take extra care on our roads this Christmas.  It’s a busy period, with many people out and about enjoying themselves in the community”
 
Mr O'Brien said motorists could expect to see a range of road safety enforcement tools in use during this period.
 
“Speeding and driving too fast for the road conditions is the single, largest causal factor in death and injury crashes around the world and police in Queensland will continue to enforce the road rules to prevent further trauma on our roads.
 
“The greatest risk to you from harm is on our roads. Don’t risk your life or the lives of others by speeding, drink driving, driving tired or not wearing a seat belt. Slow down, stick to the speed limit and drive to the conditions.
 
“I would also like to thank all police, firefighters, paramedics and other emergency services personnel working during the busy Christmas season for their selflessness and commitment to community safety.
 
“While most Queenslanders will be spending the Christmas break with loved ones, these hardworking police and emergency services personnel will be on duty, serving the community.
 
“Unfortunately, this time of year can be particularly challenging for police and community safety agencies with more people on the roads bringing greater risk of crashes, so it’s really important everyone takes care and does the right thing.”
