Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) are on the hunt for local tourism businesses to list on their new smart phone application which enables visitors to book and rate tours in the region.
The product links in with 'tripwolf', a worldwide application based travel guide whose company is located in Vienna, and has been in the development phase since the start of the year.
TTNQ Consumer Marketing spokesperson, Marcus Brady, said the regional tourism body need local tour operators to be part of the program.
"We need 100 tourism operators to sign up to it (to ensure it is viable). We want people to sign up by the end of the month so we can launch before Christmas," he said.
TTNQ has partnered with Cairns Regional Council, James Cook University, and Cairns International Airport, the latter Mr Brady says will play a key role in the app's success.
"Domestic and international visitors coming off planes will be prompted to link to the Airport's wi-fi where they can download the app directly."
Local organisations who have signed up to tripwolf include Sheraton Mirage, Rydges Sabaya, Jungle Surfing, and Wildlife Habitat.
If the concept sounds familiar, iTours, a Port Douglas based business launched their product - an application which also enables visitors to book and rate tours on their iPhones and iPads - in August.
Mr Brady, who was unaware of the existence of the iTours app, said that tripwolf would not be in direct competition with iTours "because ours will be for the whole region".
Founder of iTours, Adam Burckhardt , could not be contacted for comment.
TTNQ will be running an information session on tripwold at the Sheraton Mirage on 26 October from 5pm.

We have a local mob starting up a similar service, why would we not support them.
Next TTNQ will be buying Airplanes ( now that could help)
Somebody has a lot of answering to do on this matter.
There is a JUDAS in the camp!
Unlike Mr Ryan, I am aware of the iTOURS product. I believe I am correct when I state that iTOURS have at all times in any presentation or discussion, acknowledged that they have been in discussion with both TPDD and TTNQ bodies. iTOURS have pledged a 'donation' to local tourism bodies to assist with the marketing of their respective areas both verbally and in their written material also with their presentations. We have no reason not to beleive them.
they have been forthright, honest and obliging in our meetings.
Mr Brady should perhaps commmunicate with his boss/bosses, because I beleive somebody in TTNQ is very aware of iTOURS.
Something is not making me very suspicious with this announcement.
Mr Brady should be better informed when he arrives on 26 Oct, because there will be many questions he will need to answer.
Did you boss not attend development meetings for ITOURS????
