Stuckey "appalled" at TQ

Jann Stuckey

It's election time. While a date may not have been set for the 2012 State election campaigning has definitely begun.

Shadow Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business, Jann Stuckey, walked the streets of Port Douglas yesterday flanked by the LNP's candidate for Cook, David Kempton, to meet local retailers.

Ms Stuckey then addressed around 15 guests at an informal meeting at Sea Temple Resort and Spa to spruik the merits of the LNP's Tourism Strategy document, while using the opportunity to take aim at the State's government funded tourism body, Tourism Queensland, saying they lacked accountability.

"I'm appalled at the lack of collection of data...they don't want to be able to produce those figures," Ms Stuckey said. "That's across the Government whichever department you look at you'll find that they just don't measure.

"If you look in the (TQ) annual report you'll see a stark lack of reporting on certain campaigns.

"They'll talk about the ones that were really good like 'The Best Job in the World' and they will value it on about how many hits they got on the website, whereas I would convert that as overnight expenditure, how many nights or seats did we actually get? That's the way I'd measure it, but that's not done.

"This Vitamin Me (a $4m campaign encouraging workers to use their annual leave in Queensland) stuff, The Pledge (encouraging operators to increase service levels), the Pledge was a disgrace.

"It was ridiculous and it was blackmail for people (tourism operators) to go on the road that took them interstate and brought them no dollar value."

Ms Stuckey hinted that a new partnership with TQ, Regional and Local Tourism Organisations would be formed should the LNP take government with a focus on greater accountability for the State body.

"I can't stress enough the need for proper reporting and collection of data and KPI's (Key Performance Indicators). And if you do bad you should fess up, it should be out there in the annual report for people to see, not 'this campaign was measured this way, this one wasn't...

"The budget papers this year, they changed the reporting mechanism so you couldn't compare it to last year.

"You cannot expect us as the LNP to throw millions of marketing dollars at TQ if that's going to continue."

Ms Stuckey said the LNP's Tourism Strategy dubbed 'CANDO' aims to return Queensland as the country's number one tourist destination.

At a glance, the aims of the strategy are to:

  • Provide enhanced opportunities and communication with the tourism industry
  • Deliver a 20 year strategic plan for Queensland tourism
  • Grow overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020
  • Improve decision making and support for the tourism industry
  • Facilitate new infrastructure and investment
  • Secure new aviation services
  • Improve prospects for tourism employees
  • Enhance marketing efforts

Those in attendance raised a number of issues including concerns over penalty rates of pay, the impact of growth in the mining industry on the tourism industry and the loss of skilled labour to the mines due to the lure of large pay packets, and the apparent lack of any political advocates for the tourism industry.

Dear Editor

Your article on 19 Jan about my visit to Port Douglas reflected the concern many local tourism operators have about the industry in Queensland.

But we can’t blame the many talented and dedicated people who work for Tourism Queensland, for the Bligh government’s failure to support tourism over many years.

Our DestinationQ initiative will restore TQ to a position of strategic leadership.

Over the past decade jobs in tourism have plummeted from 150,000 to 118,000. Operators across Queensland have stated they have lost confidence in this Government and accused it of gross political interference.

Bligh government waste, mismanagement and red tape is strangling the many fantastic businesses and people in places like Far North Queensland who are trying to survive against the odds.

People in the industry know it, and are crying out for change.
Campbell Newman and the LNP have made a commitment to restore accountability in Government which has been sadly missing under the tired, long term Labor government.

I thank everyone who attended the tourism forum for their important feedback and their unshakable commitment to their region.

Again we have someone with little knowledge of the industry out there sprooking what they will do without any explanation of how it will be done. Strategies are easy the way forward from that point is far more difficuly.
At a glance, the aims of the strategy are to:

Provide enhanced opportunities and communication with the tourism industry
Deliver a 20 year strategic plan for Queensland tourism
Grow overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020
Improve decision making and support for the tourism industry
Facilitate new infrastructure and investment
Secure new aviation services

In the words of Pauline "Please explain". The name of the campaign paints a very bleak picture. "CANDO". Cando was going to fix Brisbane after the floods until it all got too hard and he walked away. Cando was going to build tunnels that would fix Brisbanes traffic problems except they are too expensive and not many people can afford to use them.
If the best the LNP can do is rubbish past campaigns of TQ and how they report our Tourism Industry must be in better shape than most believe.
Where are the real fixes and how will they be implemented Jann Stuckey.

It is alarming to read this accusation come from Ms Stuckey who has spoken to hundreds of tourism small business operators and accommodation mangers up and down the coast. Here in Airlie Beach we have questioned accountability from all levels of tourism for some time as small businesses but hearing this from Stuckey makes our assumptions far more concerning.

We have had many discussions with Cairns and Port Douglas operators about similar concerns. Perhaps our local Councils and their agencies / bodies should put grouped investment or resource activities on hold with TQ until this matter can be investigated by an independent enquirer and cleared up. TQ operates a very persuasive strategy with local and regional tourism bodies with regard to their funding. Maybe more due diligence is required before our local money is used for future TQ initatives. Couldn't hurt to be alittle wary of unreconciled campaigns.

Unfortunately if there is an unaccountable culture at TQ, the 'statutory' government body, it manifests itself in all lower levels as we have witnesses in recent years in our local Council funded tourism bodies where there seems no urgency nor real desire to measure their initiatives nor take responsibility for them if they fail to produce.

I think this has been happening in the Queensland and Australian tourism industry's ever since real international supply dwindled in the late 90's and we have really had to work for market share. I think the tourism industry officials in positions of influence are from the generation of 'networkers' and are struggling to be really effective in today's more competitive environment of converting bums in beds. Time to make a less safe and more knife edge and accountable culture for Aussie tourism agencies.

With so many small businesses relying on the effectiveness and validity of our tourism dollars allocated, my vote at this coming election like many other people with a tourism related businesses will go for the party who brings not increased funding dollars but tourism reform as to the culture in government related tourism entities both statutory and under contract.

Perhaps its time deregulation was tabled? The free market would surely make those responsible take it more seriously.
