Eligible staff will be offered redundancy packages from Cairns Regional Council.

Cairns Regional Council has announced it will undertake a voluntary redundancy package in a bid to manage costs.

Dubbed the 'Your Career, Your Choice Voluntary Redundancy Program,' the packages will be offered to eligible employees and comes as a result of a Queensland Treasury Financial Sustainability Review of Cairns Regional Council.

In a statement released from Council, the review "indicated a sound financial position for Council and suggested that we take steps to maintain that into the future."

"Like all businesses, Council has to adapt to the changed economic conditions that we currently face," the statement said.

"Council is accountable to ratepayers and we need to be financially responsible at all times. By introducing the Voluntary Redundancy Program we will be able to contain operating expenses, including wage costs, and maintain realistic staffing levels as our depressed local economy recovers."

Council have stressed that the offer is indeed voluntary and "no employee will be forced to apply for, nor accept, a Voluntary Redundancy Package."

All staff were advised of the decision on Wednesday and will continue discussions with union representatives.
