Cairns residents are being encouraged to obtain a “Smart Card” that will allow them free use of the Daintree River ferry this summer.

Councillors have voted in favour of an extended period of free travel for Cairns region locals, following on from what Council described as a "successful economic stimulus offer earlier this year" that allowed all vehicles free use of the ferry.

“This is an opportunity for the people of the Cairns region to get out and explore their own backyard,” Mayor Val Schier said.

“The northern part of our region offers a blend of World Heritage rainforest and stunning coastline unlike anywhere else in Australia.”

The temporary smart card will be available to all residents of the Cairns Regional Council area, aside from those within the bounds of the former Douglas Shire, who are already eligible for a local concession.

The smart card will record trips made by residents, allowing Council to keep track of the number of local visitors compared to those from outside the region.

“Free travel over the Daintree River will be available for residents from November 15 to January 15,” Cr Schier said.

“We look forward to seeing the results of this initiative, which will help to determine future options.

“While there will be a loss to Council, we need to weigh it up against the economic stimulus provided by waiving the fares and the positive impact that has on the wider region.”

Council have come under fire in recent times as many residents believe they are profiting from escalating ferry fees while businesses north of the Danitree River struggle.
