School targeted for breath tests

Port Douglas police have acted on public information to target their Random Breath Testing (RBT) locations in an attempt to nab drivers over the legal limit.

Sergeant and Officer-in-charge, Damian Meadows, said that the station had received calls from concerned residents who have reportedly witnessed drivers under the influence near the Port Douglas State School.

"We did a targeted RBT (last Friday) near the school in relation to some information which has been received from the public, and we performed 140 breath tests but fortunately no drink drivers were detected.

"That targeted RBT is something we're going to be continuing from now on."

Sergeant Meadows praised the public for their diligence.

"People are starting to take a vested interest in the way things are done in the community which makes our job not only easier, but it makes it more worthwhile when you know the public have a vested interest in stuff like that."

Despite the clean sheet on Friday, a female drink driver was caught at another RBT with a blood-alcohol level of 0.129 after driving from Cairns to Port Douglas along the Captain Cook Highway.

In other Port Douglas police news, Damian Smith, the man who was found unconscious in Grant Street Friday week ago remains in an induced coma in Cairns Base Hospital, but is in a stable condition.

Police have urged members of the public with information on the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

I am at a loss to understand this action ,outside the school ???do the cops really want my children and their friends to be permenantly damaged and hugely embarrased by the vision of me covered in vomit and spittle ,kebab in hand, showing a generous amount of bum crack and protesting loudly while being frogmarched to the nearest jail cell to totally ruin my Friday night ,lets stick to the rules people,breathalising is conducted in Port road and only under the cover of night ,what next ,will they require me to have a drivers licence ???? very callous ,they are innocent children (our future)
