Radio Port Douglas celebrates 10 year anniversary
Michael and Helen Gabour and their team are celebrating the tenth anniversary of Radio Port Douglas at a specially invited celebrity gathering tomorrow evening.
The station was originally founded by Jay Amundsen and Henry Ellison in 1999 and went live on air in December of that year. Michael and Helen became their partners in 2003 and subsequently took over the whole station about a year later.
Michael has consistently broadcast on the breakfast show and has built an amazing
reputation for taking his guests, particularly his political guests to the very edge of disbelief before guiding them gently back to solid ground with a smile and a soothing tone. And strangely no matter how ridiculous and dishonest he makes them sound, they keep coming back for more. A natural tribute to a passionate lover and debater of the Douglas Shire.
Under he and Helen's guidance the radio station has gone from strength to strength with a daytime schedule of Kim, Dale and Nick that would sound fantastic on any City commercial broadcaster. In the evenings the team have recruited a diverse and crazy bunch of volunteer DJs to brighten up and entertain the local and visiting listeners. In fact there are over 40 locals who are presenting shows covering every musical genre you can think of and some you probably can't !
No one can remember how many famous locals have been guest presenters over the ten years but an educated guess, from the Streetdog, Dale Priem, when he recently visited our office, would suggest it's getting on for 100.
Without Radio Port Douglas, Port Douglas just wouldn't be the same, couldn't be the same, shouldn't be the same. Congratulations on reaching 10 years of amazing service to the community, we now look forward to the next ten.....Rock on !
