Preferred res location under wraps

Describe image
The Council have yet to release their preferred site for the new Port Douglas reservoir.

The Port Douglas Reservoir concept design has been completed and will be constructed in the 2012/13 financial year, according to Cairns Regional Council.

Construction of the 23 megalitre reservoir, which is likely to be built in the Craiglie or Mowbray area, will only take place pending "positive progress on the approvals and land acquisition."

"We are currently undertaking (a) detailed engineering survey, and geotechnical investigations on this preferred site to confirm it is suitable to support the structures required," a Council spokesperson said.

"Once this is confirmed, we will begin the process of acquiring the land and approvals."

Council have not released to The Newsport where this preferred site is located saying "Until it is finalised, the site cannot be confirmed."

Currently, drinking water is directed from Rex Creek (a tributary of Mossman River) to Port Douglas, Mossman, Craiglie, Mowbray, Newell Beach, Cooya Beach and Cassowary, with water stored for the Port Douglas township in holding tanks around Port Douglas.
