Ports trolley tribulations

Abandon shopping trollies becoming a problem

The Port Douglas streetscape has been under scrutiny of late with many businesses expressing concerns over the general cleanliness of the area.

In addition there is a lack of rubbish bins, and the poor condition of the landscaping in the streets is a concern to locals. (see Newsport article 'Port businesses have their say in Chamber survey).

Stray shopping trolley's are now adding to the problem with one local resident recently writing to the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce saying she'd counted 13 abandoned trolley's on a single trip into town.

The concerned resident is calling on Coles Supermarket to help manage the situation by providing delivery services to holiday accommodation, increasing trolley collection, or by installing a containment system.

Taking a trolley home to avoid carrying your shopping might be convenient, and as enticing as it is to be pushed home in a trolley by a mate after a big night out, let's keep our streets clean and clear.

Editor Comments: There is a very easy solution to this problem; don't be a lazy bugger and take the trolley back!!

Have your say !

Well, at least trolleys don't get stuck in the throats of our dolphins, unlike the plastic bags which are all over the place! I agree with John, get with the times Port Douglas and put a coin deposit and retrieval system in place. This will make a difference, but it won't solve the problem all together.Perhaps consider a self destruct mechanism when the trolley gets more than one kilometre from the supermarket???

A $2 deposit would see most of it come to an end.
You get charged as you go through the checkout and retrieve $2 from a coin machine as you push the trolley back in. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy

I believe it is the responsabilty of the supermarket to retreive these trolleys from around the town. They make many millions from the locals & tourists alike. With unemployment the way it is i am sure they can source someone to do the job or put it up for tender. It's time they put something back into the community, as all the money we spend their goes straight out!!!!

Once trolley is removed from Coles Shopping ground should become stolen property and dealt accordingly
