Port Douglas’ own, Actin Fitness did the hard yards in this year’s Cairns Relay For Life on the weekend, in order to raise much needed funds for cancer research.

2,500 people in 170 teams attended this year’s 'Relay For Life', carrying their batons around the Barlow Park 450m per lap running track from 3pm Saturday afternoon until 9am Sunday morning.

Actin Fitness Relay Team showed great determination to complete 237 laps of the track (106.5km) in the 18 hour event, and raised $1,400 in the process. Overall, teams raised a whopping $426,000 for Cancer Council Australia.

“This was definitely an inspirational and motivating moment for us all, that made everyone realise we need to take advantage of the opportunity we have to succeed in our life as many never had the chance.” Team Member, Nick Carling said.

A candlelight ceremony took place at dusk and, by all accounts, was the most emotional and memorable moment of the night. Lights were dimmed and over 2,000 candle tributes, each inscribed prominently with personal messages of love and hope were placed around the outside of the track. “Tears were hard to fight back as we paid tribute to those lost during the ceremony which was accompanied with a minute’s silence.” Nick said.

“Every one of us had a great time and hats off to organisers who did a marvellous job to make the Cairns Relay For Life such a great success.”

The Actin Fitness Relay Team would like to thank Reloaded Design, IGA, Under Wraps, Blue Dog, and all who opened their hearts and emptied their pockets to help them exceed their goal to raise money for this great cause.

Great stuff guys! Fantastic to see our Port Douglians making the trip down to Cairns to support such an amazing cause. And thanks to the locals and businesses who donated their spare cash!
