                                                                                                               2010 Event Wrap Up

The Port Douglas Marlin Challenge 2010

By Roy Weavers | 1 April 2010

'Formula One Fishing' comes to Port Douglas. Great excitement has been generated around the Queensland fishing and marine community with the announcement that the inaugural Port Douglas Marlin Fishing Challenge has been confirmed.

This competition taking place all week, starting this November 11 through to 16 is open to all worldwide fishing competitors.

The organisers in association with their destination managers, Port Douglas Event Management report that over twenty five boats have already confirmed they will be challenging for the weeks top honours.

The fleet of competitors for the Marlin Challenge will berth at Meridien Marina in Port Douglas and the format of the challenge is two days fishing,  a rest day and then back to the blue to go all out for the inaugural title.

In accordance with popular demand, Marlin fishing now employs the tag and release system and the crew who achieve the highest number of tags win the overall competition.   The days of hanging these glorious fish to find a winning weight  has made way for the use of  modern technology to calculate the size of these monsters of the deep.

Port Douglas has a long history of both commercial and competition fishing in the days when it was little more than a sleepy fishing village when it was not unusual for fishermen to exhibit their catches on the gantry at the Marina opposite now where the Hogs Breath Cafe is situated.   Those days are long gone but the thrill of Big Game Fishing is set to be enlivened from Port with the Port Douglas Marlin Fishing Challenge scheduled for November this year.

This competition will be big game fishing at its finest  in one of the best Marlin fishing grounds in the world.  Linden Bank to the exclusive Ribbon Reef of the Great Barrier Reef off Port Douglas is world renowned by game fisherman everywhere as a premier location.  The sandy bottom for  4kms before the Continental Shelf drop off creates an ideal feeding ground  for these ultimate fighting fish.

It is planned to capture all the action of the competition on video over the week for future TV broadcast and DVD release with full coverage of Port Douglas and the surrounding region to help promote the event to become one of the 'Formula One' fishing events for the world fishing calendar.

Port Douglas Event Management is also managing the Port Douglas Solar Eclipse Marathon scheduled for November 2012 and spokesman for the management team, Bruno Bennett  said "It is fantastic that new events are being confirmed for these quieter times of the year.  It is a confirmation of what we have always believed that there really is no reason why Port Douglas and it's surrounding regions shouldn't be a 365on destination and with these quality events already in the bag and more to follow, this town will dominate the regions current event strategy.
