Port Library goes digital

A new innovative library service planned for Port Douglas will keep library users in step with the digital age.

The Library Kiosk @ Port will operate three days per week increasing hours of access for library members and offering complimentary access to the Internet and Cairns Libraries online computer catalogue.

Acting Manager of Cairns Libraries, Carol Clifford said the Library Kiosk @ Port will replace the existing mobile library currently serving Port Douglas.

“The Mobile Library Service operating in Douglas for the last twenty years no longer meets the standards required by the State Library of Queensland,” Ms Clifford said. “Although the Service has been a very special facility with 220 regular users, we are looking forward to providing an enhanced service to Port Douglas library users with the new kiosk.”

“By centrally locating the new facility in the Port Douglas Community Hall, the library will be situated close to the CBD, the Neighbourhood Centre and Clink Theatre. This will provide a service to a broader cross section of the Port Douglas residents.”

A fortnightly personalised service to residents of Port Haven and Alchera Retirement Villages will be an integral part of the new service.

“Cairns Libraries plans to establish a chapter of the Friends of the Libraries and these volunteers will eventually offer individualised delivery to the aged communities in town,” Ms Clifford said.  “We aim to encourage increased library membership through augmented and more accessible library services for Port Douglas.”

The Library Kiosk @ Port service will commence Tuesday 2 February with operating hours Tuesday 1 – 5 pm, Thursday 9 am – 1 pm and Friday 9 am – 1 pm.

The current Mobile Library Service will resume operations Wednesday 27 January and will wind up at the end of February.
