'Off-season' gains sponsorship

A business embracing the energy efficiency message.

Earth Hour, the climate change awareness raising event embraced by countries the world over will be the new naming rights sponsor for Port Douglas' 'off-season' between January and March.

A spokesperson for Earth Hour said Port Douglas epitomises the energy saving conservation message during these months.

"We think it's a great fit. There are no cars on the streets, many businesses leave their lights off for weeks at a time, and even the sun doesn't come out for most of the season. It's fantastic!"

The Cook Islands became the 134th country to participate in Earth Hour 2011 on 26 March, a record-breaking number for the event.

Come back at 12pm today to hear what's in store for Port Douglas in the 2012 'Earth Hour Off-Season.'
