Mayor Val fills her diary for Carnivale

Record number of floats booked for 2011

Port Douglas will shine this weekend as the glamour of Carnivale takes over this seaside town.

Mayor Val Schier said she was looking forward to being a part of the colourful festival, which kicks off with the Longest Lunch at Mirage Country Club and the always-popular Macrossan Street Parade.

“Carnivale is the best time of the year to be in Port Douglas – the place truly comes alive with colour and entertainment,” Cr Schier said.

“I’m looking forward to attending the events and activities this weekend, including the opening lunch, Queensland Bulls Masters cricket match and quilt exhibition.

“But I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the Council’s float in the street parade, which is themed ‘Wonderland’.

Cr Schier said there would be something for everyone at this year’s festival – from food and wine to kitesurfing, campfire songs, a dance party and film night.

“If you live in Cairns and have been thinking about visiting Port Douglas, this weekend is the time to do it,” she said.

“I congratulate the organisers on putting together such a fantastic program that I am sure will be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.”

The festival continues through to the following weekend, culminating with a market day and linking with the start of Cairns Airport Adventure Festival.
