Approximately $12,000 has been raised for Australia’s disadvantaged youth as a result of Saturday’s third Whitelion Jungle Ride from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation.

The 180km journey (and there was a 90km version too) was enjoyed by 136 cyclists of all ages, including eight-year old Maddy Hardy, pictured recovering after a mammoth effort.

Organiser, Lesley Stephens, said Maddy had completed most of the journey on her own, with a little help up the hills, but was to be commended for her inspiring effort.

“It was just incredible,” Lesley said. “Where did that spirit come from?”

Lesley had similar praise for all who took part in the event, where riders had the option of riding both ways, or being transported back from Cape Tribulation to Port Douglas.

“We had fantastic support crews this year, all made up of local volunteers, who kept the riders hydrated, fed and safe,” she said.

“And we had pack leaders for the first time this year, who made it safe for the cyclists on the roads and it was good for the motorists too.”

As outlined on The Newsport on Friday, Whitelion co-founder and AFL premiership player, Glenn Manton, was also in Port Douglas to take part in the 90km ride.

“Glenn did the ride to Cape Trib and thoroughly enjoyed it,” Lesley said.

“And he provided a great talk to the competitors and volunteers at the Port Douglas Surf Club afterwards.”
