Make Snapper happier

Snapper Island

In a continued effort to rid our beaches and oceans of rubbish, Tangaroa Blue are organising two beach clean up events and need you to join in.

Snapper Island, a regular clean up site, will again be given some TLC by volunteers on 5 February, while Cape Kimberley will be given a good going over on 4 March.

The effects of plastics in the ocean are well documented, but despite the horrific impact the problem continues to wreak havoc on sea life.

The work of Tangaroa Blue and beach clean up volunteers not only makes a positive impact on the areas they visit, but provides hope that the issue can be solved through education and some hard (but rewarding) and ongoing work.

But Heidi Taylor from Tangaroa Blue said diligence needs to be maintained for the problem to be managed.

"For me the big indicator of how big the problem is is that we did a clean up of Cape Kimberley in September last year, and then again in December when we collected 815kg of rubbish.

"That amount washed up in just three months. This has to be a sustained effort," she said.

If I could, I would.... but I can't! 12,000 miles separation is the problem, but when I get back into Port sometime in the future, I'll check this initiative out and lend a hand! C'mon folks, get behind Heidi and the crew and help to keep "paradise" in good nick.
