Lagoon poll sends strong message

Part of the Waterfront Plan is this artist's impression of the Port Douglas Lagoon Pool. We all agree that actions speak louder than words.

The response to The Newsport poll on whether a lagoon pool in Port Douglas is the town's biggest priority has been overwhelming, and the result has been a resounding "Yes!"

Port Douglas Waterfront Master Plan

Nearly 200 people, including a strong contingent of local business owners, have voiced their opinion in the biggest poll in The Newsport's history, with around 75% eager to see the development get under way as soon as possible.

Comments from readers (see below) suggest that tourism in Port Douglas suffers without the facility as it struggles to attract visitors in the 'stinger' season, losing out to places like Airlie Beach who have a waterfront public pool.

"(We) have just travelled up the Queensland coast and every seaside town we visited had a beautifully presented recreational foreshore…" said Sue Parry.

"We are trying to attract tourists to this town but we don't have recreational facilities that support the local community let alone visitors. The time for procrastination, referral and discussion is over. It is time to do it."

The call to action comes at a time when the first meeting of the Port Douglas Master Plan Advisory Committee has been held to prioritise the waterfront projects.

Mayor Val Schier confirmed that the committee discussed the merits of a lagoon pool.

"We have a budget of $800,000 this financial year, and it's my understanding that the Whitsunday's lagoon pool cost around $15 million so we need to look at the whole concept and look for funding," she said.

Local representative on the committee, Gary Hunt, said the way forward will be clearer after their next meeting in six weeks.

"The first meeting was an information session, and when we meet again we'll have a clearer understanding of what can be done in the short, medium, and long term."

Incoming Leichhardt MP, Warren Entsch expressed his concern over the time it has taken for the project to get underway.

"I'm concerned how the whole process has gone. I'm amazed it has taken ten years to get to this point.

"It's a critical piece of infrastructure and saying it'll take another ten years (for the project to be completed) is rubbish."

Mr Enstch said he has selected a team of people to expedite the project made up of local representatives from the tourism industry, business leaders, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

"You can consult these things to death. Government agencies (local and State) should be kept out of discussions as they're pushing they're own agendas.

"The people I've identified have got a lot of fire in their bellies. These people are movers and shakers and have made things happen."

Mr Entsch's comments throw an uncertain light on the future role and make up of the newly formed Port Douglas Master Plan Advisory Committee.

Mr Entsch said there was a strong need for a comprehensive plan with real costings, describing the current figure of $20 million over ten years as "rubbery."

Is a Lagoon Pool Port Douglas' highest priority?

The Airlie Beach Lagoon was opened to the public on 8th January 2001 and this beautiful addition to the Whitsunday region is very popular with locals and visitors alike. The swimming area contains a children’s wading pool, another shallow children’s pool which is a maximum depth of 1.5 metres. The remainder of the pool has a maximum depth of 2 metres. Supervision is undertaken by Lifeguards from the Royal Life Saving Society of Queensland who are in attendance from 7.00am to 9.00pm, 7 days per week. Dedicated security staff patrol the site from 9.00pm to 5.00am, 7 days per week.

A similar pool has been included within the Port Douglas Waterfront Masterplan which has been approved by Cairns Regional Council but of course there are no dates confirmed for the order of building priority so why not take this opportunity to have your say and encourage them to push this project to the top of the list!  bringing locals and Visotors to the

Have your say !

I believe the lagoon pool will be great in the wet season as we cannot swim in the sea.We also need to remember that the sun is often very intence so to prevent daily sunburn skin cancer etc... we need to have some sort of sun cover over the area to be sun smart. The local swimming pool in Mossman has a sun smart cover over most of it,you can safely swim during the hotest part of the day in summer without risk of skin sun damage.Cheers Helen Cooper.Port Douglas

It has been talked about for far too long, with more and more families moving to the area aswell as the tourists, we don't have many things to offer the young family. Imagine a lagoon pool with cafe and picnic areas, where people could spend the whole day, spend money, and tell everyone that Port Douglas now has everything!! There is no need to holiday any where else!
C'mon, we are sick of paying extreme rates and having only talk to show for it!
Jill Dixon, 01-09-10 10:59:
I am a rate payer in Port Douglas and visit twice a year. I think the lagoon pool is the NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. Someone has to take over and stop talking about this project and just do it.

Although I live in London now, issues regarding Port Douglas are still very dear, having been born and bred here. The lagoon sounds wonderful, remembering many long summers being unable to swim, except at the Gorge or rivers. But great care needs to be taken with the environmental impact of such a scheme - it will change so much around the foreshore and may have cataclysmic impacts that haven't been dreamt of - such as to the mangroves and the geography of the inlet. Many improvements have gone ahead in the past without due consideration of the wider issues. Good luck.

I reckon using water from the Mossman gorge to power a flowrider (wave pool) which then fills the kiddies/beach pool which then cascades through some Mossman Gorge style granite rocks into the adults lip less lap/lagoon pool (not to interrupt the awesome views) deep enough to do intro/dive courses would be wicked - we could then use the excess water to irrigate the lush tropical gardens this town is renowned for.....would be a good start making sure we don't ruin the right hander that breaks on the point-also ensuring that a area is set aside for local marine life to swim
Toni Bennett , 31-08-10 16:35:
I would love a lagoon pool and many other facilities here but if it costs $ 15 million, I imagine our rates will have to increase substantially to afford the construction. The issue of life guards and security may also cost rate payers. I would prefer to see a beautification of the Stinger Park which included a water park and botanical walk area - like muddies which would cost less and need no life guards.
Tony Di Giulio, 28-08-10 21:24:
I have to pay $2200 in rates a year to CRC for my PD unit......so how much $$$ is CRC getting from all the residents and investors of PD. A fair whack - I bet!!! C'mon CRC - be fair, show some vision and start actioning. PD is in desperate need of a lagoon pool to truly make it a desirable holiday location all year round.
Will Devlin, 27-08-10 23:33:
A waterfront lagoon in the style of the Cairns Lagoon would be a huge boon for all-year-round swimming and fun in the water for locals and tourists alike. The outlook from Stinger Park is unrivalled anywhere along the east coast of this great country and the Lagoon facility would attract the envy of all who use and know of it. It's been in the 'planning' stages for years and it's about time this project was given the go-ahead and effected. I can envisage so many spin-offs for local businesses.
Angie , 26-08-10 14:13:
Way to go CRC. Now get the ball rolling and start this wonderful swimming area ASAP. OUR TOURISTS (WHO COMPLAIN CONSTANTLY THAT WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING LIKE THIS YET) AND OUR LOCALS WILL BE IMPRESSED AND EXCITED.
Sue Parry, 26-08-10 10:19:
Have just travelled up the Queensland coast and every seaside town we visited had a beautifully presented recreational foreshore. Water features, walking paths, playgrounds, lawns, ablutions, seating and BBQ areas - something for everyone.
Have been here for over 20 years and we have only had cosmetic changes to our foreshore and it shows. Our forefathes had an enclosed bathing facility we need their vision now.
We are trying to attract tourists to this town but we don't have recreational facilities that support the local community let alone visitors.
The time for procrastination, referral and discussion is over it is time to do it.
bonobo gronka, 25-08-10 01:31:
wet season = ocean like soup = hot and sweaty - and one can only swim in the stinger net

beach lagoon would give children as well as adults, both local and visiting, an alternative swimming option

would be a focal point, meeting place, chance to cool off in fresh water without the sticky saltiness of ocean
Nick Atkinson, 24-08-10 17:29:
I would like to see some of our Rates money put back into our town. I believe we deserve our fair share. When I look at Cairns and what they have down there I can't help but feel we are getting the raw end of the deal.
