Help at hand for Parkinson's sufferers

Two high profile Parkinson's sufferers; Mohammed Ali and Michael J Fox.

by Penny White

Many of you will be familiar with Parkinson’s disease. Being a slow progressive, neurological condition that affects the control of body movements greatly affecting the quality of life.

There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but there are effective treatments and therapy options that can help manage symptoms.

I am pleased to inform you that there is a support group for Parkinson’s sufferers in the local area now operating. It is our intention to be able to bring awareness, support and information to those needing assistance.

Parkinson’s support group members can offer each other emotional and practical support.  Support groups are run by volunteer coordinators and provide friendship, emotional and practical support with people facing similar challenges allowing everyone to share feelings, resources and experiences.

The Port Douglas, Mossman Support group aims to raise money for differing purposes including allied health professionals attending meetings and the “Day by Day Journals”.

This new diary has been developed for people with Parkinson’s disease and their carer’s as a ‘one-stop shop’ record book providing the resource of health management.

The Port Douglas - Mossman support group is holding a fundraiser night at the Court House Hotel on Saturday, 26 March.

We therefore seek your support by donating gift vouchers to be used as prizes in a “goose raffle” or auction as part of the event.

For more information regarding the group or the fundraiser, please call James Watson on 0438 148 691 or by email sahanzu@bigpond.com, or myself on 0429 158 436.

Your support for PDM Parkinson’s support group is truly appreciated and we look forward to seeing you at the fundraiser.
