Floodstock a big day out

Floodstock will be remembered as one of the biggest and most successful events in Port Douglas in 2011, exceeding all expectations thanks to the ongoing generosity of the community.

According to Floodstock organiser, Gregg Buchanan, over 500 people packed into the Port Douglas Yacht Club to see some of the region's finest musicians.

So eager were people to support the event, dozens of people arrived well before the 2pm start time (a very non-Port like thing to do) ensuring every act played to a large, and fully appreciative audience.

And the result - another $15,000 heading from Port Douglas to the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal.

"It was brilliant. Everything ran really well, the muso's played really well and everyone had a great time," said Mr Buchanan. "$15,000 is pretty good I reckon."

Mr Buchanan said the event was a culmination of the efforts of a number of people.

"There are so many people to thank, but first up would have to be all the musicians who gave their time and played so well. Hats off to, Los Caracoles, Stu Forbes, The Distractions, The Gusman, Tonic, Kim Hurley, The Walker Bros. The Antipodylans, and of course The Ukenator.

"Thanks also to the Yacht Club who supplied the venue, and donated all their profits from the bar (over $6,000). Especially to Richard and all his helpers there who did a great job setting up the big marquee and running the bar, and  the fine job done by Matt and Simon and  the kitchen staff who donated $1,000."

Mr Buchanan was also quick to thank Larry Cash on sound and the vast number of businesses who supported the event.

My wife and I were up from Syd on hols and our local mates brought us along to Floodstock . It was great to be amongst so many locals instead of tourists and made me think and feel how good it can be to live in Port as a local.

All bands were great especially the Walker Bros ( the young gal singing with them was very talented) and Arnie who sang and called the raffles.

It was like Port days of old where the whole town got together on a Sunday arvo. Well done Greg and everyone involved.......and well done Port Douglians old and new coming out to support such a worthy cause. It made be proud of this community......and proud to be Australian

I agree Lesley. It's virtually everyday we hear of people in this community digging deep to help others. People like Gregg who organised Floodstock and Wendy who raised $5000 from the community walk the day before are fantastic.

As always it never fails to amaze me the seemingly never ending generosity of the wonderful poeple of Port Douglas and surrounds.
It's as though there's a giant people magnet that has attracted so many incredibly good, decent and generous people to live in this area, that we are fortunate enough to call home, how blessed we are.
