Farewell to Parrothead Bob

Bob 'Parrothead' Harper and wife Di

by Kerry Larson

Tributes flowed on Friday at Port Douglas Combined Clubs for well-known identity, Bob "Parrothead" Harper, who passed away recently in Sydney after a battle with cancer.

About 60 people attended Bob's memorial service at The Tin Shed, with tributes from friends present and absent bringing a tear to the eyes of those in attendance.

After hosting a weekly country and western radio show on PortFM for many years, songs by Bob's favourite artist, Jimmy Buffett were played, as well as a ukulele tribute from his muso?s night friends.

Stories were also recounted about Bob's fondness of playing practical jokes and stirring local politicians. Later, flowers were thrown from the Tin Shed's pontoon into the Dickson Inlet by proud friends to say a final farewell.

Anyone who would like to send cards or flowers to Bob's wife, Di, and children may be sent care of Kim Morris, 85-87 Watson Street, Bondi, NSW 2026.

Di, your man was a Legend. Port Douglas will never be the same without him. He bought so much pleasure into many people's lives. He certainly added to the rich tapestry of life in Port. Geoff Birch & I are currently in Malaysia on our boat Miranda and the grapevine got the message to us. Our thoughts are with you. He will always be remembered. Light & Love, Lyn
