Families benefit from generosity

Tens of thousands of dollars were raised through the Mayor's Christmas Cheer Appeal.

The Cairns region raised nearly $57,000 in the Mayor's Christmas Cheer Appeal to help residents doing it tough over the Christmas period.

The funds were used to purchase items for 620 food hampers, packed by volunteers in the lead up to Christmas.

“This is certainly the highest amount raised by the appeal in recent years,” acting Mayor Margaret Cochrane said.

“There has been a particularly large number of people seeking assistance this year (2011).

“There are so many people doing it tough in our community, but it is heartening to know that there are so many others willing to dig deep to help."
