  • Council CEO comes under fire

Gary Hunt has presented a deputation to Council criticising the lagoon pool consultation and community feedback process while emploring councilors to let the public choose their preferred design.

While Mayor Val Schier was not in attendance due to commitments in Canberra, Mr Hunt addressed councilors including Deputy Mayor Margaret Cochrane and Cairns Regional Council CEO, Lyn Russell, who was on the receiving end of some barbed remarks from Mr Hunt.

"Anybody who has been speaking out like me has been treated as though we're pariahs," Mr Hunt said.

"The CEO took umbrage at the fact that I sent a letter out to all of you (councilors) and to the members of the Urban Advisory Board and to the Waterfront Management Committee. She considers it as perjorative which I don't believe it is.

"We've been told by the local manager in the press, she's saying that we're an uninformed vocal minority...You've got 17 private organisations, public organisations, community organisations that are saying 'we don't want it beside St. Mary's (By The Sea).'

"We're not the minority, and we are vocal, and I think we're equally as informed as some of the people you've got giving you advice."

Mr Hunt called for the lagoon design created by his firm and Hortulus Landscape Design to be presented next to the Council's recommended plan at the Macrossan Street shop front so residents can compare the two and form an educated opinion on their preferred option.

Mr Hunt said that information displayed during the community consultation period was strongly biased toward the site near St. Mary's By The Sea, and that he was disappointed at being allocated just 15 minutes to put forward a case for the alternative.

Council will now deliberate on Mr Hunt's presentation.

Mr.Hunt, very well done. You have more experience and knowledge then the whole bunch in Cairns ever will have. It feels good to have you on our side.
Bravo Gary!!!

Wanted to thank you for your video, Gary was great and right on target. What about Port Douglas???
What can we do to support him?
jim walter, 26-06-11 18:13:
One could be forgiven for thinking that the Port Douglas foreshore belonged to the mayor of CRC, rather than the people of Port Douglas.
Lucy and+Barry Chadwick, 25-06-11 18:35:
I am so glad Gary is making the time and puting so much energy to ensure we are not a bunch of uninformed lot and we matter!! Thank you so much Gary for speaking up on our behalf.
Katie L'Estrange, 25-06-11 17:56:
Yes, we do have a beautiful beach and sea... that we are unable to swim in for the hottest months of the year. My kids and I can't wait to be able to pack our bags, towels, sunscreen, toys and books and spend a few hours enjoying a stinger-free dip. I hope the community are able to view Gary's presentation and comment on it in a forum agreable to council.
Sara McLeod, 25-06-11 17:22:
Well done yet again Gary! Thank you for your tireless energy and dedication to get this right for Douglas, rather than accepting yet another bungled delivery from CRC.
Coral Deen, 23-06-11 23:25:
Well done Gary and Jelena! Our community has paid out for consultants before- big bucks - yet we have to do it again for some reason that just escapes me. I , myself, do not see the great significance of a public swimming pool(lagoon). We have an amazing beach, other places do not and need such a thing.
Gail , 23-06-11 18:29:
Bravo Toni. Douglas has had the rough end of the pineapple for far too long. It's a though we are being continually punished for our desire to secede from the CRC. Time to FREE DOUGLAS from this incompetent, totally unimaginative Cairns-centric bureaucracy.
Toni , 23-06-11 12:34:
The bleeding obvious is - nobody outside CRC and SLG wants a pool next to St Mary's. But whilst we are deciding whether we need a lagoon and whether we can afford Gary's beautiful vision could we please get on with the simple, basic part of the Plan without which nothing else really works, ie demolishing the waterfront buildings from the boatramp to Rex Smeal (all the leases have expired) and landscape the park. The view from Wharf St will be spectacular, St M's will be surrounded by garden and CRC will demonstrate that it really does care about the commitment it made to DSC.
Mayor Val Schier, 23-06-11 11:55:
Unfortunately I was promoting the region in Canberra and not chairing the meeting; I would certainly have made additional time available for such an important issue.
anna whitfield, 23-06-11 11:48:
Important agenda item yes, but why does everyone think we need a lagoon? Does everyone really think a lagoon will enhance our town? Do you think people will pack their bags, towels, sunscreen, toys, books etc and leave their resort pool / pool at home to go to a lagoon pool (get in the bus/car with all the luggage)? Anyone? Anyone with kids - will you pack up to go to a lagoon or would you rather go to the beach where you can walk for miles and build sand castles along the way? Honestly - I doubt that a lagoon will be the saviour of the town. Infrastructure, break the monotony in the town's presentation, enjoy nature's integrity and offer great service - all that would go a long way to help visitors enjoy our region. A lagoon is fake - how can we market our region as being pure/natural etc if we offer a fake swimming hole.
Jenni Silby, 23-06-11 11:14:
I am furious that such an important issue was only given 15 minutes to be presented at Council. Keep pushing Garry. Port Douglas deserves it.
Frank Frikker, 23-06-11 10:55:
Fantastic. Great presentation.
Well done Garry. Thanks.
Stella Zammataro, 23-06-11 09:54:
Outrageous. Only 15 minutes to present such an important agenda item!
