Eco-librium - BAG IT!

Bag it

Tangaroa Blue Ocean Care Society will be hosting a screening of the new, award-winning environmental documentary Bag It at The Wildlife Habitat, Port Douglas on Friday 24 February, 2012.

Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health.

Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags a year, that's over 10 million new bags being used every day.

This single-use mentality has led to an estimated 50 million bags entering the Australian litter stream every year. Unless they are collected, they remain in the environment and accumulate at a staggering rate and create a real threat to marine life and seabirds.

The film explores these issues and identifies how our daily reliance on plastic threatens not only waterways and marine life, but human health, too. Two of the most common plastic additives are endocrine disruptors, which have been shown to link to cancer, diabetes, autism, attention deficit disorder, obesity and infertility.

Tangaroa Blue Ocean Care Society recognises the importance of reducing single-use plastic use for the safety of our community and environment. During beach clean up events held in the Far North over 80% of items found are plastic, and many of these plastic packaging items.

Screening Date: Friday 24th February, 2012
Screening Time: 6.30pm
Screening Location: Wildlife Habitat, Port Douglas

Tangaroa Blue has an info wall at the Coffee Club in Port Douglas for the month of February with "sign on" sheets for upcoming Snapper Island cleanup. Did you know each coffee sold on Wednesdays gets a dollar donated to their fantastic cause. Anyone who misses the film viewing on 24th Feb at Habitat, can see "Bag IT" one month later on 24th March at the Clink Theatre as part of the Port Douglas Community Garden Festival...love Tangaroa Blue...keep up the good work...Garden Festival will have the coffee club space during the month of March - drink your coffees there on Wednesdays :)

Hi Ann

I couldn't agree more. It'd be a great campaign to get going and we at The Newsport would be more than happy to promote it.

having just read the fantastic news regarding the grant for Heidi Taylor & Tangaroa and wishing I was back in Port to see the doco "Bag It", I have often said and wondered over the past five years, why Port is not a plastic bag free town? We are small enough to do something about it, especially if we educate the big supermarket chains that freely hand out plastic bags willy-nilly. Seriously, we should not be handing out plastic bags within the town and should be encouraging locals and tourist alike to use eco-friendly bags. Maybe PDDT should think about this one along with the Port Chamber of Commerce.....but I sharn't hold my breath!
