Community Garden interest grows

The Port Douglas Community Garden is one step closer after a public meeting last week.

The Port Douglas Community Garden is one step closer to reality after the first public meeting was held at the Community Hall last Wednesday night.

More than 50 supporters of the concept heard from speakers including Kuku Jalanji Elder, Bennett Walker, Kuku Jalanji botany expert, Ray Pierce, Division 10 councillor, Julia Leu, and Peter Firth from the Edmonton Community Garden, among others.

The garden project, which will be located on the vacant land opposite the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre after a ten year lease was approved by Council, is expected to take up to five months to complete.

It is envisaged the garden will grow fruit, vegetables, and flowers, have a BBQ area, and a shed where skills can be shared.

The creation of the Community Garden is to be filmed as a documentary which the group hopes will find a world wide audience.

Anyone wanting to get involved in the establishment of the Community Garden can contact Kevin Eldridge at kevin@kstartours.com.au or Tanya Morris at cdw@pdnc.org.au.
