Christmas appeal a success

Over $40,000 was raised in the Mayor's Christmas Appeal.

More than $40K was raised this year in the 2010 Mayor Christmas Cheer Appeal.

Acting Mayor Margaret Cochrane said the appeal had hit its target thanks to the generosity of Cairns individuals and businesses.

“The Mayor and I would like to thank all those who so kindly donated funds this year.  We know it has been tough for businesses and individuals across the region and yet there is so much generosity,” Cr Cochrane said.

Cr Cochrane said the collection was an indication of the generosity of the regional community, who dug deep despite facing a tough year.

“Council was able to deliver 550 Christmas hampers; one to every family that applied.

“The Christmas Appeal relies on cash donations as well as food suppliers and volunteers who pack and deliver the hampers in time for Christmas.

“It is a wonderful collaborative effort and proves the spirit of the season is alive and well in our community.”
