Linc Walker of the Kubirri performed a traditional smoking ceremony at Bubu Kinkari (George Davis Park) yesterday, to prepare the site for the construction of an all abilities playground in Mossman.


Cairns Regional Council will begin building the new playground, which will replace the existing playground, early next week. The skate park and BMX track will remain.


Mr Walker said the ceremony, which involved the burning of paperbark, was important practice. "It's a sign of respect for the land. It's a shared country for everyone to use and the smoking ceremony keeps everyone safe. It let's the land know we're coming onto the land," he said.


Division 10 Councillor Julia Leu said the new playground will be a fantastic addition for Mossman families.


“The playground structure is designed to be used by children with a variety in levels of ability.  It will include some very engaging structures such as a double flying fox, a wheel-chair accessible carousel, bamboo maze and balance beams.”


The playground will encompass a sensory space with outdoor musical instruments, sand and water areas and a barbeque picnic area. The existing playground at the park will be closed during construction works. 


It is expected that the project will take eight weeks to complete, and plans are in place for the Minister for Disability Services and Multicultural Affairs, Annastacia Palaszczuk, to open the new playground. 


The redevelopment is jointly-funded by Council and Department of Communities (Disability Services) as part of the Queensland All Abilities Playground Project – Enabling Participation in Play.
