Birdwatching paradise at Wonga

Spotted Whistling Ducks

by Cathy Ford

Wonga Beach is becoming known as a birdwatchers paradise of late, particularly of rare species. This year there have been many different flocks of birds flying in to the area that are very rarely seen here.

Red Tailed Black Cockatoos have been sighted foraging along the beach front lands, an unusual sight as they normallly do not cross the coastal ranges.

Just in the past week a pair of migrating Latham`s Snipes have been photographed at Wonga, and the rarely seen Spotted Whistling Ducks have been making the lagoons of Wonga Beach their present home.

Avid birdwatchers have been very excited about the influx of the bird species to be found here and even the locals are getting into the act, taking out their cameras and photographing the beautiful birds that nature brings their way.
