Birdies, cats and dogs

The building site is raring to go for the new Paws and Claws refuge.

By Kerry Larsen

Efforts to provide homeless dogs and cats with a new refuge in Port Douglas may come a step closer next weekend when a charity golf day is held.

The Paws and Claws/Pacific Toyota charity golf event at Port Douglas’ Sea Temple Golf Club will see a four person Ambrose competition take place on Sunday morning, with heaps of prizes to be won for the competitors.

However, funds raised will go to the biggest winners - the homeless dogs and cats, who will hopefully soon see a new home whilst waiting for placement with local families.

A purpose-built, environmentally-friendly animal care centre is proposed for recently-acquired land at Craiglie industrial park, on the opposite side of their current Captain Cook Highway location.

Fund-raising has been a long process for the Homeless Animal Society and Boarding Kennels, which trades as Paws and Claws. The centre has long been a Port Douglas institution, with countless animals making their way into the homes and hearts of many locals.

The centre also encourages volunteers of all ages to get involved in initiatives, such as the popular dog walking programme. Services such as dog boarding, grooming and flea washing are also available and help raise funds towards the new centre.

Next Sunday’s charity golf event will see a 7.30am start for a 9am tee off, with a gift pack and breakfast snack on arrival, a clinic and competition hosted by Bob Stanton. The use of electric carts and a BBQ lunch is included, along with lots of prizes and on-course events.

Registration is $125 per player, and bookings can be made at Sea Temple Golf Club on (07) 4087 2222.
