"Anarchist" seeks Port vote

: Ian Thomas will run for Mayor in 2012.

Mayoral candidate Ian Thomas is positioning to win the Port Douglas vote after what he describes as an "almost complete disregard of Port Douglas by the current Cairns Regional Council."

Mr Thomas, who will be running as an independent, says he is a businessman first and foremost.

"I am a businessman not a politician. The reality is that now I am a businessman involved in local politics, an experience I have never expected," Mr Thomas told The Newsport.

"I am a very straight up and down individual, I am not a "joiner" or cocktail party socialiser.

"I am the first to admit that I am somewhat of an anarchist when it comes to the erosion of our democracy by political parties, I am however not a redneck.

Mr Thomas said he has become aware of some of the issues which face the residents of the region.

"I have not begun my campaign in Port Douglas, however I have been speaking to a few friends and past business associates of mine and I am aware of just a few of the issues of major concern in your local community.

"For instance I will definitely not allow fluoride to sully your local water supply. I am aware also that there is widespread concern from many residents about the proposed beach or park project.

"I do and will support any effort by the majority of your community to reform your own Council by any means that they feel will be of assistance," he said.

Mr Thomas is calling on businesses to help fund his campaign to become Mayor, asking for a $100 donation.

Mr Thomas plans to visit Port Douglas in the coming weeks to speak with residents and urged voters to get in contact with candidates for the top job.

"It is very necessary for the local community to engage their mayoral candidates as often as possible, this is the only way they can verify in their own minds the candidates sincerity, ability, and determination to represent all divisions and their communities as priority one."

You cant win an election on a couple of popular platforms. What it takes is experience, knowledge, common sense and a passion to represent people's needs. That what our politicians today do not do!

It always worries me when those seeking election (let alone the electorate) can't decider between State and Local Govt. responsibilities/issues. The addition of fluoride to our water is a State directive which local govt bodies must comply with. Luckily for us there is a State election due on the 24th March.

It seems that both Mr. Thomas and the staff at The Newsport have no idea what anarchism means or what it takes to be an anarchist.

Had I been a resident I would certainly vote for this man and I would donate.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Mr Thomas is elected as there are many anti fluoride voters in the area and then you have the ALP and the LNP who both support fluoridation. The ALP have a track record of threatening behavious if they don't get their own way - will the LNP do likewise - I'll put money on it!
