We received this media release from the Cairns regional Council press office on Monday afternoon entitled "Celebrating two years of accomplishment"
It is two years today since the election of a newly formed Cairns Regional Council, representing a constituency that stretches from Mirriwinni to Wujal Wujal.

Mayor Val Schier said she was proud of the achievements of the Council. “New administrations always face challenges and this council, like so many others throughout the state, faced the added responsibilities of bringing together the people, services and infrastructure of two areas,” Cr Schier said.

“Despite the impact of the GFC and other factors outside of Council’s control, we’ve continued to improve service and initiate projects.”

“The $188 million upgrade of sewage treatment plants, creation of the Cattana Wetlands, closing of the Portsmith dump are projects Council has undertaken in a move toward a cleaner sustainable environment to support the region’s appeal to tourists.”

Cr Schier listed engaging the community in forward planning of major projects as high on Council’s priority agenda.

“The Port Douglas Waterfront and Mt Peter Masterplanning and the Festivals revitalisation are achievements that mark Council’s progress and dedication to community engagement.”

“The flood mitigation works in the CBD and the Disaster Co-ordination Centre planned for Woree are initiatives that will establish increased security given the challenges posed by the wet season.”

The Regional Tennis Centre and the Botanical Gardens Interpretive Centre are projects to be completed this year that will enhance the services to locals and visitors.

Editors comments: After Sunday's Rally in Port Douglas it is amazing how two parts of the same can have such different views. One side says it's a celebration and the other says is a disaster.  We need to get your feedback on this to assist the efforts being made by the Douglas Region to make our own current Council aware of this clash of interests, 'cos they seem to have got their ears and eyes closed.
