$13,000 raised for Shelly

More than $13,000 has been raised from a fundraising event to help a local woman travel around Australia while suffering from a life-threatening illness.

Eighty locals turned out to the Sea Temple Golf Club on Sunday to support 30-year-old Shelly White, who is battling an aggressive form of ovarian cancer.

Shelly is well-known around Port Douglas after working at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas’ food and beverage department as a supervisor for a number of years. After leaving the Sheraton, she was thrilled to live her passion and work in dive operating on the Great Barrier Reef, and more recently worked at Otz Café in Four Mile.

Sunday’s auction raised $6500, and will bolster the $4000 worth of entry fees raised towards Shelly’s travel fund, enabling her achieve her wish of seeing Australia with her partner, Nick – a trip they are currently undertaking.

Event organiser, Barbara Wolveridge, said Shelly and Nick were now on their way to Weipa and were thrilled and grateful at the outpouring of generosity.

“Shelly’s having a great time and has caught several barra every day,” Barbara said.

“She sends her love to everyone and would like to extend her thanks to all who participated in her fundraiser.

“And we must thank everyone who made the day possible. Without their help, this could not have been achieved.”

The sponsors who made this possible were:

Otz Café (Lizzie & Karen), Sea Temple Golf and Country Club, Sea Temple Resort & Spa, Salsa Bar and Grill, GBR, The Wildlife Habitat, Tree of Life Healing, Ulysses Getaways, Harrison’s Restaurant, Rydges Sabaya Resort, Margo (massage), Poseidon, Whileaway Books and Café, Christine’s Hair Gallery, Bistro 3, Peppers Day Spa, On The Inlet Seafood Restaurant, Daintree Station, Jane Adams, Synergy, Sassi’s Cantina, Finz Restaurant, The Distillery, Calypso, The Hair Shop, Skyrail, Kuranda Scenic Train, Hartley’s Crocodile Farm, Oceanic Art, Port Douglas Day Spa, Seafood House, The Iron Bar, Michael Wolveridge, Bobby Stanton, and the Fabulous Walker Brothers.
